Pregnancy/paediatrics
Many women suffer from back pain during pregnancy due to increased weight bearing and postural changes affecting the low back. Also changes in the pelvic joints (sacroiliac joints) allow the pelvis to expand during childbirth. Many women’s back problems start during pregnancy and when lifting small children. Gentle, safe chiropractic treatment can lead to less pain, easier childbirth and less future difficulties. Treatment of pregnant women not only reduces pregnancy-related symptoms, but also helps to promote optimal comfort during pregnancy and encourages a positive experience in labour for both mother and baby. Treatment can promote optimal foetal positioning which research has shown helps to reduce medical intervention during labour. Childbirth and forceps deliveries can sometimes injure a baby’s spine. Fifty per cent of school children suffer from back pain. Chiropractors have also had success in treating cases of colic, ear ‘infections’, bed-wetting, recurrent tonsillitis and childhood asthma.
